Seismic transducers calibration system

Calibration of the seismic sensors should be conducted in the low-frequency domain, which means, that the relative method used for calibration of the vibration transducers is not applicable since it does not guarantee the required accuracy level. The problem is that the reference accelerometers have uneven AFR characteristic in the low-frequency domain. Thus, calibration of seismic transducers requires implementation of a different approach.

The use of displacement transducer allows to solve the issue of accurate reproduction of vibration in the low-frequency domain. Besides, it enables control of the relevant parameters in the course of tests performance.

Calibration system of the vibration transducers

The seismic transducer to be calibrated is mounted on the shaker system.

The displacement transducer is installed in such a way so that the laser beam would be transverse to the measuring axis of the transducer under calibration.

The transducers are connected to the input channels of the FFT Spectrum analyzer. The signal from the generator (i.e., the output of the FFT Spectrum analyzer) is sent to the power amplifier and the coil of the shaker system. The generator is used for the control of frequency domain and maintenance of the set vibration level depending on the values received from the displacement transducer.

The principle of measurements performance is as follows: the displacement transducer is used for control of the vibration parameters produced by the shaker system (i.e., displacement and frequency).

Based on this data, the system calculates the vibration velocity and vibration acceleration in real-time mode and adjusts the voltage level applied to the shaker system, thus securing conformance of the parameters with the test profile used.

As the system reaches steady operation, it begins the analysis of the signal produced by the seismic transducer under calibration and calculates the transmission ratio for the set frequency range. The measurements are conducted at each point of the 1/3 octave spectrum throughout the entire frequency range of the transducer under calibration, which allows to evaluate the AFR parameters.

In the interface of the program, the user has to set the frequency range and the amplitude of the vibration displacement to be used in the calibration process. Based on the readings of the displacement transducer, the system determines the required vibration level, which is then divided by the voltage value at the output of the seismic transducer. Thus, there is obtained the conversion ratio of the transducer for each particular frequency. Upon completion of the test procedure, there is produced a Test Protocol.

It is possible to edit the Test Protocol template.
